원래 사랑은 특정한 사람과의 관계는 아니다. 사랑은 한 사람과, 사랑의 한 대상과의 관계가 아니라 세계 전체와외 관계를 설정하는 태도, 곧 성격의 방향이다. 어떤 사람이 다른 한 사람만을 사랑하고 나머지 동포들에게는 무관심하다면, 그의 사랑은 사랑이 아니라 공생적 애착이거나 확대된 이기주의이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 대부분의 사람들은 사랑은 능력에 의해서가 아니라 대상에 의해서 성립된다고 믿고 있다. 사실상 그들은 심지어 그들의 '사랑을 받는' 사람을 제외하고는 어느 누구도 사랑하지 않는 것이 그들의 사랑의 강렬함을 입증하는 길이라고 믿고 있다.
